ay-Z more than a rockstar at 9/11 concert
By MESFIN FEKADU (AP) – 2 days ago
NEW YORK — Since the collapse of the World Trade Center on 9/11, many people have helped rebuild New York City in different ways. Rapper Jay-Z did it his own way: headlining a star-studded concert at Madison Square Garden.
The 39-year-old Brooklyn native performed to a sold-out crowd Friday night for his "Answer the Call" concert, which paid tribute to the police officers and firefighters who died responding to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The Pledge of Allegiance kicked off the show, followed by "The Star-Spangled Banner" infused with an electric guitar. Jay-Z continued with his own New York anthems — including "Empire State of Mind"; "Where I'm From," a song about his upbringing in the Marcy housing projects complex; and "Brooklyn Go Hard," a collaboration with alternative singer Santigold.
The rapper, whose real name is Shawn Carter, went on to perform over 30 songs from his 11 albums during the two-hour set. The concert aired on Fuse TV, and all proceeds will be donated to the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Benefit Fund.
A myriad of special guests came out to help celebrate. John Mayer rocked out on the electric guitar on "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" and Mary J. Blige added her signature gritty soul-sound on "Can't Knock the Hustle."
Jay-Z's wife, Beyonce, dominated the stage with a swagger-jammed dance routine to her hit song "Diva."
Rihanna, in her first performance since her February altercation with Chris Brown, showed she's ready to return to the stage when she sang on "Run This Town." Kanye West also performed on the song.
"We stand here tonight eight years later even stronger, even stronger," Jay-Z yelled before the performance. "This is our own. We run this town New York City!"
The performers set a serious tone Friday night — wearing mainly black and gray onstage.
The crowd, who chanted "Hova," Jay-Z's nickname, between each song, never sat since the first song began.
On the eight-year anniversary of 9/11, the rapper — who has had major success on the charts and has garnered as much respect on the streets — hoped to add light to the tragic day.
"We should always move past it and be strong but never forget," he said in a recent interview.
Jay-Z held a moment of silence three-quarters into the show, but the most emotional moment of the night came later when a montage of the faces of the men and women who died on 9/11 was shown. The head shots of the fallen appeared on a backdrop of buildings while Jay-Z's "Young Forever" played in the background.
"Make some noise for everybody that lost their lives so we can live ours," he said.

Plane lands on California highway, no major injuries

(CNN) -- A single-engine airplane made an emergency landing on a California highway Sunday morning, though no major injuries were reported, authorities said.

The Piper Comache 260 carrying a married couple landed on the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101.

The Piper Comache 260 carrying a married couple landed on the southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 101 just outside Santa Barbara and a few miles from the airport, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer James Richards.

The plane's engine quit, and as the pilot descended, he lost control of the plane and landed in the southbound lane facing oncoming traffic. The plane struck two vehicles while landing, then spun and hit another one with its tail, Richards said.

One vehicle passenger was treated for minor injuries, he said. No other injuries were reported.

The landing happened at 10:36 a.m. (1:36 p.m. ET) and held up traffic for less than two hours, Richards said.

He added that the plane had departed Temecula in southern Los Angeles, California, and was destined for the airport in Santa Barbara, a flight of about 180 miles.

The pilot told authorities that he attempted to switch fuel lines during the flight, but was unable to restore power to the plane. He said he alerted a tower at the airport that a landing on the highway was imminent, Richardson said.

75 African migrants feared drowned off Italy

ROME, Italy (CNN) -- Up to 75 migrants are missing and feared dead after a harrowing 20-day journey from northern Africa to Europe, a United Nations agency said Friday.

Authorities in Italy rescued five Eritrean nationals Thursday in the waters off an Italian island. Survivors said that up to 75 other migrants, mostly fellow Eritreans, died as they tried to reach Europe, said Andrej Mahecic, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

"We are shocked by the accounts ... from five Eritreans who are allegedly the only survivors from a boat that set out from Libya 20 days ago," Mahecic said Friday. "The survivors are in very poor health and were taken to Italy for treatment."

Italian authorities Friday were patrolling the waters off Lampedusa, an island in the Mediterranean Sea roughly half way between Sicily and North Africa.

About 80 migrants were aboard the boat when it ran out of fuel and got lost about two days into the journey, said Laura Boldrini, also with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees.

She said she based her information on accounts that a survivor provided to one of her colleagues on Lampedusa.

After some people on the boat got sick and died, the others dumped their bodies into the sea for fear of also getting sick, Boldrini said.

Several migrants screamed for help in English when their boat passed other vessels, but only one fishing boat stopped to give the migrants some food and water, Boldrini said, citing the account that a survivor provided to her colleague.

Those reports alarmed the U.N. refugee agency.

"This is contrary to the long-standing maritime tradition of rescue at sea" Mahecic said.

Italian police in Rome confirmed that naval officers rescued five Eritreans off the coast of Lampedusa, but they declined to provide additional details.

The number of illegal immigrants traveling to Italy and other European destinations has increased in recent years, with many Africans fleeing faltering economies and repressive regimes for the chance of a better future.

Lampedusa has seen arrivals of illegal immigrants double in recent years, from 14,855 in 2005 to 30,657 last year, according to the Italian Interior Ministry.

In the first eight months of this year, though, the number of illegal immigrants arriving at Lampedusa declined compared with the past few years, with 7,567 arrivals recorded through August 19, according to Interior Ministry figures
